Twelve Years of Deep Cultivation in Central Asia: A Return Visit to a Benchmark Project in Kazakhstan
Release Date:2026-05-26 Views:2

Recently, a service team from Hangzhou Energy and Environmental Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “HEEE”) traveled to Kazakhstan to conduct a four-day targeted return visit to the sludge biogas power generation project at the Shymkent Wastewater Treatment Plant.

As an overseas benchmark project implemented in 2013, this project stands as a classic example of HEEE’s commitment to the green development concept of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. Having now operated smoothly for over 12 years, the project continues to efficiently perform its core function of sludge utilization. This return visit aims to deepen cooperation and communication, identify operational details, explore long-term operation and maintenance solutions, and write a new chapter in Sino-Kazakh environmental protection cooperation.

Project at 12 Years: From Implementation to Bountiful Results

The Shymkent sludge biogas power generation project is an important municipal sludge resource utilization project in southern Kazakhstan. It has a designed capacity of 498 tons of municipal sludge per day, producing approximately 6,500m³of biogas per day, and generating 13,000 kWh of electricity per day.

Over the past twelve years, the project has successfully achieved the transformation of municipal sludge through “reduction, resource recovery, and energy utilization”. It has not only completely resolved the environmental problems associated with sludge storage and disposal at the wastewater treatment plant, but also converted waste sludge into clean electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 26,000 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, thereby injecting strong momentum into local low-carbon development. As a landmark project of Sino-Kazakh environmental cooperation, it also serves as a vivid illustration of Chinese environmental technology going global and empowering green development in Central Asia.

In-Depth Return Visit: Dedicated Support, Charting a New Course for O&M

During the return visit, our team conducted multiple in-depth discussions with the project’s operation and maintenance team, carrying out comprehensive and detailed reviews and communications across the entire project operation process.

Both parties jointly inspected the project’s core equipment, carefully checking operating parameters, equipment wear conditions, and maintenance records, and precisely adjusted key process control points. During technical exchange sessions, leveraging our years of O&M experience, we provided professional solutions to the client on core issues such as equipment operation optimization, process parameter adjustment, and emergency fault response, while patiently answering questions encountered in their daily operation and maintenance.

Commitment Unchanged: Technology as a Bridge, Building a Green Belt Along the Silk Road

HEEE has always been driven by the mission to “turn waste into resources and make the planet cleaner.” With mature process technologies and service capabilities, it has established a number of overseas benchmark projects.

This return visit to the Shymkent project is not only a fulfillment of the commitments made twelve years ago, but also a re-examination of technical quality and a deepening of cooperative partnerships. Going forward, HEEE will continue to apply its professional technology and high-quality services to ensure the long-term stable operation of every overseas project, continuously promote the export of Chinese environmental protection technology, standards, and equipment, and support the green and low-carbon development of countries along the “Belt and Road” with concrete actions, allowing the flowers of green cooperation to bloom brilliantly along the Silk Road.
